Do Now
Do Now
What do I do?
Students should always have something ready for them to work on when they enter your classroom. A "Do Now" is an activity that students begin working on as soon as they enter the room. This gets students prepared for class and engaged in learning as soon as they enter, even if it is before class has started. This should be a short, (three -five minute), written, warm-up activity to be completed at beginning of the class period to help the students get their brains ready, in order to stay focused throughout the class period. Teachers can decide how they will grade or use these do now's. They can be turned in for a participation grade, accuracy grade, at the beginning of class, or at the end, depending on the teachers preference.
This method should work based on research because this practice is used daily, providing students with structure. This is a procedure that will benefit an efficient classroom because students know what is expected of them. By having this procedure set in place on the first day of class, there will be maximized time for learning. Class time will not be wasted explaining what to do, when to do it and how. The students will know that this activity is an expectation at the beginning of every class period.
A specific example of a "Do Now" in an eighth grade math class would look like this.
