Tight Transitions
Tight Transitions
Time is of the essence!
Tight transitions are essential in the classroom. You should teach your students to be able to transition from one activity to another quickly and efficiently so that you don't lose essential learning time. There are different methods you can use for transitioning in the classroom. Students should know the set procedures by the end of the first week of school. These should be set in place and they should stay consistent throughout the year.
This method of tight transitions should work based on the fact that efficiency leads to higher motivation in the classroom. If students are not wasting time during transitions they are more likely to stay focused and on task. Tight transitions that are set in place at the beginning of the year offer the students self management. Because the students know what is expected of them, they are able to manage themselves without instruction, which keeps the classroom efficient. This allows more time for learning and less time wasted on changing activities.
One way of using tight transitions in the classroom is by coming up with a short chant that everyone knows and follows when they change activities. Another option is to have transitioning be a race against the clock. Often students enjoy competition so if you have a race against the clock to see how quickly they can put away certain materials and be prepared for the next activity, many students will be engaged and they will make the transition quickly.
This is the method I would use while transitioning from a group work back to teaching a lesson. These instructions would be on the board whenever the students begin their group work. They would read these instructions before beginning. This same technique would be used in every transition.
